Daily Herald — Below is an excerpt from a Letter to the Editor published in the Daily Herald on March 2, 2010:
"Unfortunately, most people who provide services tend to only hear from
those who want to complain. I would like to do the opposite and send a
public compliment to the staff at Alden Valley Ridge in Bloomingdale for the
care my father received for the past nine months.
"He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease over four years ago, and last
January, due to diminished financial resources and the level of care he
needed, we had to place him in a nursing home. We were steered toward the
Pathways (memory care) program at Alden. I simply cannot say enough about
the staff. These people were compassionate, gentle, patient and kind to not
only my dad but to our entire family.
"Recently, my dad passed away peacefully at the nursing home as I sat with
him. During the two-day vigil, Alden Valley Ridge staff was especially
thoughtful in bringing dinner, snacks, and drinks to me, my family, and the
hospice workers. Even as I signed out as a visitor at Alden that evening,
the receptionist at the desk acknowledged my loss.
"There certainly is no shortage of horrible nursing home stories reported in
the newspapers and rightfully so. Our family, fortunately, had only good
experiences at Alden and wanted to make that known."

"Because of its convenient location, Alden Valley Ridge was the place I chose when Mom needed rehabilitation after she broke her leg. We found the staff to be professional, competent and caring. The atmosphere of the facility added a certain level of ‘hominess’ that my mother, at 84 years old, needed and enjoyed. She especially liked the beauty salon where she could get her hair done regularly, which added to her feeling good about herself and her appearance during a somewhat challenging time. The discharge referrals for at-home rehabilitation were terrific and added to her fast and complete recovery. She never needed a walker or a cane! After the terrific care Mom received, I heartily agreed to be a member of Alden Valley Ridge’s Advisory Board when I was asked earlier this year.
